Manage Tasks and Docked Lists in OneNote

Poor Relation Comes Good

OneNote stood for many years an overshadowed and undervalued piece of software without a clear audience or purpose. However it has matured in the last few years and established itself as an excellent organisational and productivity solution with few rivals. This is not only due to the stability  of the app but also the flexibility and customisation that can be achieved. OneNote has reached a point of universal access across operating systems, browsers and device types that few can match (Evernote, maybe?) and through the stability of the desktop Microsoft Office ribbon features and the flexibility of cloud storage and syncing (and web based access and editing) is now at home anywhere.

Using Docked Pages in OneNote to Support Writing

Dock To Desktop

The dock to desktop feature in OneNote is an excellent way to support writing in both creative writing and non-fiction wwriting. When OneNote is used as a repository of all whiteboard material (it makes an excellent replacement for generic interactive board software - but more on this later) this can provide pupils with not only a bank of all whole-class created 'working-wall' material but also the plans, brainstorms and working word lists created by pupils themselves.

Print a Documents to a Page in OneNote (010)

Desktop Tip: Drag documents, links or images onto a OneNote page to store them on the page as files, or printout to page to see a preview of the document on the page itself.

Press Tab for a Table in OneNote (007)

Desktop Tip: Press tab at the end of a word to change to a table layout and add a new column to the right of the cursor.

Make Nesting Sub-pages in OneNote (006)

Desktop Tip: Use the subpage tool to nest each lesson's resource pages under an introduction page. This could also work to nest lessons under a daily page.

Use Your Mobile Camera to Add Pictures to OneNote (004)

Mobile Tip: Use your phone/portable device's camera to snap children's work into OneNote and share with the whole class mid lesson. From here you can annotate, comment, and rework together.

Expand the Page Full Screen in OneNote (003)

Desktop Tip: Use the expand tool to see your page whole screen when projecting or working on small resolution screens. In this way you can use OneNote as your interactive/board software.

Use the Pin Tool in OneNote (002)

Desktop Tip: Use the Pin tool (top left below ribbon) to keep the current OneNote notebook list open/closed.

Download OneNote on Everything! (001)

Open your Microsoft OneNote notebooks on all your devices to see what tools are available on each device - different devices have different facilities, and the phone apps are catching up fast!
